Members of the Ka-Na-Wa-Ke Canoe & Kayak Club of CNY believe in fostering and perpetuating canoe lore, art, appreciation and cultivating the spirit of conservation.
This has become our creed. Anyone who believes as we

Q. How much skill and experience do I need to become a member?
A.
Many potential members come to the club with
this same question. We don't require that you have
well developed canoeing skills and experience.
However, by participating in club trips and events
over time, you will gain both. The combined canoeing
experience of the current members would span a century
or more and each member is willing to give you all the
help you need to make your time on the water safe and
enjoyable.
Q. Do I need to have a canoe or kayak before I become a member and what type of canoe or kayak is best for me?
A.
You do not need to own a canoe to become a member. If
you are new to canoeing then we will help you gather
the information you need to make a canoe selection
that is best for you. Like the years of experience
mentioned above, the members of the club have been in
just about every type of boat made and are willing to
share their thoughts with you about the type of canoe
or kayak that would work best for your desired type of
paddling.
After gaining the knowledge from the members we
suggest that you visit the Adirondack Paddlefest in
Inlet, New York where, for a small fee, you can try
out any type of canoe or kayak to help you make your
selection. Canoe and Kayak manufacturing
representatives and the Paddlefest Staff are ready and
willing to answer any and all questions you may have.

Q. What about meetings, where are they held and when?
A.
Our meetings are held the third Thursday of the month
from September to May except December. They start at
7:30 p.m. and last about 2 hours. Club business,
paddle trip reports, informational programs and
socializing with other members is the agenda.
Refreshments are served as no meeting would be
complete without them. The meetings are held in
different locations depending sometimes on the
program.
Q. You mention "The program", what does that mean?
A.
Well, the Ka-Na-Wa-Ke Canoe & Kayak Club of CNY has a program for
each meeting. We are not just a summer activity club.
During the winter when the water is too hard to
paddle, we have our annual Pot Luck Dinner and
election of officers. This is a not to be missed
event. The food, the good conversation, the awards,
the elections, and did I mention the food? Snowshoe
at Beaver Lake Nature Center and other locations,
cross country ski at member's homes and other
locations, Adirondack story tellers and local
historians at the Old French Fort on Onondaga Lake. An
evening at Highland Forest for horse drawn sleigh
rides and games by the fireside, and when the water is
soft again some meetings are held at member's homes
that are lucky enough to be on water or our annual
evening paddle of Cazenovia Lake to kick off the
summer. This is what I mean by programs.
Q. What about the Canoe and kayak trips, are they easy, hard, short, long, and where do they go?
A.
Experienced Ka-Na-Wa-Ke Canoe & Kayak Club of CNY members coordinate
canoe and kayak trips for short evening after work
paddles, to full day trips, to weekend camping trips
and even week-long explorations according to the
ability and interest of the members who care to
participate. Trips are submitted by members who are
qualified to be coordinators to the club's Trip
Scheduler. The Trip Scheduler, who has many years of
experience, makes sure that a trip is properly defined
and the skill levels of the trips are clearly posted
as novice, intermediate and experienced to insure the
safety of the participants.
Trips throughout the central New York area are offered each year. The Adirondack Park is a favorite due to its vast water resources, out of state trips like the New Jersey Pine Barrens are great trips, as are out of country trips to Canada on the eastern St Lawrence River - where you may have the opportunity, as one member did, for a whale give you a lift and the ride of a lifetime (Recommended for Kayaks).
Q. How do I get to know about these trips and all that goes on in the club?
A.
Your membership entitles you to a newsletter that is
published monthly. This newsletter will inform you of
the meeting dates and times. Also, it will inform you
of the program that will be presented or the activity
for that month's meeting. A trip schedule is included
in every newsletter and covers canoe trips, snowshoe
trips, cross country ski trips and Oh! Did I mention
bicycle trips? Yes, we have bicycle trips, workout
that lower body with after work and some Sunday bike
trips. Learn the Erie Canal trails, the Onondaga Park
trails, the many places in downtown Syracuse where
deer and beaver have been seen on bike trips in the
inner city.
Q. What does it cost to be a member of the Ka-Na-Wa-Ke Canoe & Kayak Club of CNY?
A.
Membership in the Ka-Na-Wa-Ke Canoe & Kayak Club of CNY is $15 per
family per year. Membership dues for current members
are payable in January of each year. Members who do
not renew will not receive their newsletter effective
in March of the year due. The Ka-Na-Wa-Ke Canoe & Kayak Club of CNY
funds are used to support the club functions, the
newsletter, donations to conservation efforts that
effect and support paddling sports and this web site.
