Eaton Brook Reservoir Trip Canoe/Kayak - June 11, 2008

by Submitted by Brenda Veilleux

It was a warm spring evening with gentle breezes and clear skies. The water was still, warm, clear, refreshing and very inviting. One could hear and feel the lake calling us to paddle its pure gentle waters. It was an intoxicating evening. These combinations made for a perfect paddling evening in which it was destined to be as well as spectacular.

Five water crafts participated in the activity which was filled was laughter, camaraderie and a good time. We saw bass, trout and sunfish along with birds, wildflowers and children playing in the water. There were a few boats on the water, however, by the end of our paddle, we were the only crafts on the water. Needless to say a wonderful evening was had by all!

Editor's Note - My sincere apologies to Brenda for the delay in getting this in the newsletter. It was sent to me in June. The newsletter went on break for the summer and during that time, her article got tucked away, only to be recently re-discovered.

Saturday on the South Sandy

What a great day we picked to be heading for the beach! The temps were a bit chilly starting out, but soon warmed up with the bright sun overhead. We had one canoe and six kayaks. Three new people were along for the ride, scoping out our club.

We enjoyed a leisurely paddle out to the beach where we claimed a couple log "benches" and ate our lunch. Afterwards, we walked the beach with our grocery bags that Naneen provided and picked up a bit of trash. The beach was amazingly clean of most garbage. The day was just perfect for wandering the shoreline and discussing recent and upcoming trips.

Richard Drosse, our flotilla's photographer, took some fantastic photos of an osprey with a fish in its talons and on our paddle back he snapped a great shot of a green heron. It was definitely a picture perfect day.

As it must, the outing came to an end with the usual few of us heading to a local ice cream shop, Cherries. Alas, it was CLOSED! Even though we were foiled of getting our traditional dessert "tripcap" (akin to nightcap), fun was had by all.

Trip participants: Alta Cortright, Richard & Naneen Drosse, Amber Olin, Rena (friend of the Drosses), Mike Whitney and Jane. Fearless leader: Colleen Drenckhahn

23 paddlers in nine kayaks, six tandem, and one solo canoe enjoyed a perfect summer evening on the water June 21. After arranging vehicles at the takeout, the group paddled from Montario Point through South and North Colwell Ponds and Goose Pond to the South Sandy Creek outlet for some beach time. When we left the beach, we proceeded through Floodwood Pond and the feeder streams to Lakeview Pond and the takeout on Pierrepont Place, and made it to Pulaski in time for our ice cream stop!

Cycling the Erie Canal, July 6-13

by Larry Keefe

Five Club members rode their bicycles from Buffalo to Albany on the "10th Anniversary Cycling the Erie Canal", organized by Parks & Trails New York. Andy Andersen, Joan Gardner, Larry Keefe, Connie and Mike Russell camped each night of the trip and visited historical sites by day. The total distance biked was 400 miles with the longest day being 65 miles.

Gear transportation and most meals were handled by the Parks and Trails organization. The weather was hot and dry except for the last day when it poured for hours making it an official trip.

The riders all agreed it was a great experience. New York is indeed the Empire State.
